"Until we have permission to open the wing, all science classes are meeting in the gym," said a statement from Kimberley Eves, director of communications for the Greenwich Public Schools. "The students are sitting on the floor with their teachers and teachers are conducting classes as well as possible.
"Some teachers are taking their classes to open computer labs, some are outside in the shade, some are conducting class in the Student Center, and some are remaining in the gym," she said.
The Science Wing remains closed because the hot water tank leak Tuesday caused electrical damage to a sewage pumping system, Eves said.
"There is no danger to students or staff," she said.
Without functioning bathrooms and sinks, the school is not permitted to open the wing.
"As soon as we have the OK, we will reopen the science classrooms," Eves said.
Greenwich High School was closed Tuesday after a water leak was discovered in a tank that had been repaired and inspected this summer.
The problem was in a storage tank in the lower level of the Science Wing below the classrooms. The tank had been repaired and inspected by an outside contractor as recently as August, and the tank had again been checked as recently as Friday, the district said.
Water was contained in the utility basement, and and the water tank was to be replaced, the statement said.
