Whoever said science cant be fun has never visited a science fair like the one at Cos Cob School in Greenwich. Nicolas Del Priore learned otherwise when he calculated the height from which he had dropped an object at the schools first annual Science Expo.
With the schools second floor transformed into the Cos Cob Hall of Science, parents and students tried experiments that tested their sense of smell and demonstrated how structures support weight.
Principal Kimberly Beck said the expo was designed to show different areas the children are studying. "It really is a much greater focus on science and our programming," she said. "We took a theme of, science is everywhere, and everyone is a scientist."
The expo had been scheduled for January in honor of science month, but it was postponed to February because of the many snowstorms. Each day in January, an interesting science fact was read during the announcements. Students were asked to submit fun facts. "We had fact wars on the recess playground," said Beck. "The big winner was the one who had the most science facts."
Fifth-graders showcased their work building bridges out of toothpicks and gumdrops. Isabella Ross and Julian Oleson created a gumdrop bridge titled "Sprinkles." They displayed a journal in which they wrote that after putting weight on the structure it began to tilt.
Third-graders Elaina Cummiskey and Nina Lupinacci showed a diagram of flesh-eating plants made with paper and piping. "[The Science Expo] is an opportunity for them to do two things: first, to really be the leader in the family and showcase their learning. Second is to really be the learner," said Beck.
