School Board Honors GHS Girls Swim Team

Greenwich High School's Girls Swimming and Diving Team was recognized Thursday at the Board of Education meeting for being named the No. 1 girls high school sports team in the state for 2009-10 by the U.S. Marine Corps and Connecticut's High School Coaches Association.

"Beyond the strong athletic record, the selection was also based on team character, service to their community as individuals and a team, their academic record and their future aspirations," said Sidney A. Freund, superintendent of schools. "In many ways, the optimize our vision of the graduate. They show sportsmanship, their hard work and their competitiveness."

The Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Springfield, Mass., partnered with the coaches association to support local high school coaches and athletes in the state. The award given to the GHS team is one of the highest awards for sports teams in the state.

"We are very proud of our Girls Swim Team for winning this award," said GHS Headmaster Chris Winters. "Coach Hawks and the young women of our team represent the best in high school athletics. All of our female athletes strive to be the best they can be—in the pool, in the classroom and in the community."

The award will be presented to the team at the coaches association's Annual Hall of Fame induction dinner Nov. 18 in Southington.
