Rotary Honored For Backpack Donations

Before the start of the school year, the Rotary Club of Greenwich helped more than 200 Greenwich students in financial need by providing backpacks, notebooks and other school supplies. At the Board of Education's meeting Thursday, John Jee, a Rotary member and project organizer, accepted the district's recognition for the club's good deed.

At the end of August, Rotary Club members were notified by the town's Department of Social Services of families needing to start the school year. After sending letters to families offering the service and asking them to register their children, Rotarians purchased more than 1,000 notebooks, 950 folders and 400 packages of pencils. They distributed more than 200 backpacks filled with pencils, pens, crayons, glue and more to Greenwich students.

Jee accepted recognition at the board's meeting at North Street School. "His focus has been on giving back to the community," Superintendent Sidney Freund said. "He recognizes the grave need that exists in our town and has worked hard to address that need."
