Students at Riverside School in Greenwich kept the civil-rights movement alive last Tuesday as they celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a special performance by actor and poet Rochel Garner Coleman.
Teachers and students filled the school gym to watch, "MLK: Amazing Grace," Coleman's performance of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life. The three-man team acted out short vignettes told through people who had first-hand experiences with King. They also sang songs from the period such as "This Little Light of Mine."
King was assassinated April 4, 1968, by James Earl Ray. U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., introduced the first bill to Congress to make King's birthday a commemorative holiday. Illinois was one of the first states to adopt the holiday in 1973 before it became a national holiday. The bill was passed and signed by President Reagan in 1983.
