The Greenwich High theater arts department will perform the show at 7:30 p.m. May 16 and 17 and at 3 and 7:30 p.m. May 18. Tickets are $20.
One of the biggest hits on Broadway in the 1990s, the show has been slightly altered to be more suitable for high school students.
"Rent: School Edition," according to Musical Theater International, "retains the dramatic intent of the groundbreaking rock musical, and consists of minimal changes to language and the removal of one song to make it possible for many schools to perform this piece."
While the subject matter may be somewhat on the mature side for a high school musical, Greenwich High's director Patty Cirigliano says the show's message makes it a production worth tackling.
“'Rent' is a powerful story about friendship, struggle, passion, lose, hope and love. It is a wonderful vehicle to promote discussion about difficult topics like consequences for choices, promoting respect and dignity of all individuals, and finding ‘connection in an isolated age,’" Cirigliano said in a statement. "The students are incredibly excited about the opportunity to sing this amazing score and create the world of the show."
"Rent" follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
Greenwich High's production of the show stars Brett Steinberg, Oliver Prose, Alex Benedict, Hale McSharry, Laura Valentine, Annie Martino, Cameron Riolo and Liz Stillman.
