PTA Fills Calendar at Julian Curtiss

For Wendy Friedman, a mother of three, it made perfect sense to jump in and be involved in any and all types of school activities. As PTA president at Julian Curtiss School, she has taken on a role of leadership and commitment to the school.

"One of the best things is that my own children are so proud and excited that I am involved in their school," she said. "It gives them such a good sense that I'm helping their school be the best it can be."

Friedman has brought a number of fresh ideas to the table. At least 30 programs or events are scheduled for this school year alone. "I am a literacy advocate," she said. "We have started a new program called 'Reading Buddies,' where parents volunteer to come in and read to first-graders one-on-one."

Later in the school year, a Used Book Fair will be held. "A children can come in with $2 and walk out with two books," said Friedman. "It is a win-win for everyone."

The next PTA meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the school cafeteria immediately after morning drop off at 8:15 a.m.

Although her position is not technically a full-time job, Friedman finds herself going to Julian Curtiss every day—whether it's to pick up the mail or just to see what is going on. "I am very hands-on," she said. "Education is the most important thing, and I have a new sense of responsibility to the school."

As a PTA president, Friedman says she plays a number of roles. "I act as a communicator, problem solver and a mentor," she said. "I think in any good organization, you can't just be a good leader without having great people supporting you. My job is to have the JC PTA continue to thrive by having the parents in the PTA grow and learn."
