Teachers, parents and students celebrated how people of different backgrounds and customs come together as it marked the 20th Annual United Nations Day at Julian Curtiss School of World Languages on Friday.
"At both the U.N. and the Julian Curtiss School, there are many people who have many differences," said Michael Reilly, a fifth-grader at Curtiss. "All of the children at our school come from different parts of the world. We have a variety of customs, but we come together every day to learn together and become friends."
The entire student body was dressed in native garb and carried the flags of their different nations in the courtyard ceremony. More than 60 countries were represented, showing the community's multicultural diversity. A new addition this year was Wales. Fifth-graders filled the air with a school theme song and "Love Makes the World Go Round" by Ravosa.
U.N. official Joseph Verner Reed spoke to the crowd about the important work the group does every day. "We are at work for the planet, for jobs, for we the people," he said. "We are forming a multilateralism that can deliver results to all people, especially those most in need.
"Our students at JC, who follow our 'Excellent Eagle Expectations,' are becoming citizens and developing the capacity to uphold the aims of the U.N.," said Trish McGuire, the school's principal. "Our community consists of many colors, languages, and a variety of beliefs and customs. But despite all of these differences, we come together every day here at JC to work, learn and form a close-knit community."
