Parents, teachers and town officials turned out at Asiana Cafe to support the Greenwich Alliance for Education's Tuning In To Music program. The fundraiser exceeded its goal and brought in nearly $20,000.
"Kudos to our event committee and chairs," alliance Executive Director Julie Faryniarz said. "They did an outstanding job, and we're thrilled with the results. The funds raised at this event will enable us to provide many more students with access to private instrument instructions this year."
Studies have shown that music education often helps a child do well in other academic areas, she said.
Alliance supporters enjoyed a buffet dinner and silent auction as well as a cello-guitar duet performed by the Connecticut School of Music founder Ken Kuo and guitar instructor Matt Butterman. The school administers the music program for the alliance.
"This event was a tremendous success for the TITM program," said Faryniarz. "We raised enough money to provide 25 students with semi-private music lessons and extended the awareness of this program to many more people who value music education in our community."
Board Chair Christine Kim said the program provides free weekly private and semiprivate lessons to kids in elementary and middle school in town who are enrolled in band or orchestra but do not how access to private lessons.
