Scott Flansburg, aka The Human Calculator, impressed the students of Greenwich Academy with his math wizardry on a recent visit. In turn, the students impressed Flansburg with their budding math skills.
During his time with Lower School students, Flansberg did a subtraction exercise and went through the magical properties of the number nine. The students were delighted to learn that throughout the nine times table, the last number in every set goes from nine to zero and the next goes from zero to nine. For example: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90 and so on.
"Numbers are the coolest language in the world," he said. Regis Philbin nicknamed Flansburg for his ability to perform complex calculations in his head. He is the Guinness Book of World Record holder for "Fastest Human Calculator."
Flansberg called on the students for help with an intense subtraction problem. He left the room to assure the girls he could not see the full problem and said, "I will do a week of your math homework if I don't get this right!" Low and behold, Flansberg was able to figure the problem out with very limited information.
