Greenwich elementary school students will walk into classrooms with fewer students in them when schools open Tuesday, district officials said at last week's Board of Education meeting.
As enrollment levels out, officials expect classroom sizes to stay between 16 and 22 students. A letter from Superintendent Dr. Sidney A. Freund said that in order to keep class sizes at that lower level, kindergarten and first grade classes at Hamilton Avenue School, grades two through four at Julian Curtis and grade one at Parkway School are being kept below projected enrollments. Freund noted that as of Aug. 18, there were 4,093 students, which is 53 fewer than the projection.
Cathy Delehanty, president of the Greenwich Education Association, said smaller class sizes would make it easier for teachers to help every student.
John Curtain, a district special projects manager, said the schools are considerably closer to the Board of Ed's projections. District officials attributed an enrollment increase last year to the recession, which led families to think twice about costly private schools.
