Greenwich's Whitby Starts School Year on a High

GREENWICH, Conn. – Whitby School in Greenwich started off the new year with an all-time high enrollment, a new faculty and a new look.

“What better way than with a new contemporary identity to signal to our community and to the world our growth and the many bold changes we've made at our school,” said Doug Fainelli, Whitby’s head of school. “This new identity and key messaging presents Whitby as a modern and innovative school committed to readying students to thrive in the 21st century.”

Whitby, an integrated Montessori and International Baccalaureate pre-kindergarten through 8th grade private school, began its 2011-2012 school year with an all-time high September enrollment. Despite the difficult economy, it is the fourth consecutive year of enrollment growth, with an increase of 21 students over the 371 students who began the previous school year. According to Bob Horne, director of communications, the growth reflects increased prospective parent demand and a strong retention rate among existing parents.

To accommodate this growth, Whitby added an additional classroom in both its lower elementary and middle elementary levels and hired 17 additional faculty members–many with extensive experience at local as well as international schools. Nadia Meier, Whitby’s director of enrollment, said, “It is so rewarding to see the remarkable interest in Whitby’s integrated Montessori and International Baccalaureate program, and we are thrilled to be able to expand and have more well-qualified students and faculty join the Whitby family.”

The school also launched a new-brand identity, seen online and off across campus, including an oversized, translucent “Living Logo” that lets students stand in place of a removable “I.” Fainelli said this reinforces the school’s philosophy of putting the student at the center of learning.
