Greenwich's Waverly Group Starts New 'Adventure Club' For Kids

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Waverly Group in Greenwich is partnering with the Stamford Jewish Community Center this fall to offer a new program, Adventure Club, with classes set to begin Sept. 23.

The club is an after-school program for children who would benefit from additional support such as those with language, sensory-motor and learning delays. This program is designed to give children who may not be comfortable on their town soccer team or in Brownies to have a recreational experience where they can meet like-minded peers and participate in fun and fulfilling activities.

“Many of the children we see in our offices end up in social skills groups, simply because they need a peer group,'' said Alisa Rohdie, co-founder of Waverly. "We were concerned that as a society we are over ‘therapying’ kids, and what they really need is a place to have fun. We’ve learned through our programs that children more readily develop social skills through natural opportunities, and we have skilled therapists running our programs who can turn those moments into meaningful experiences.”

The idea for Adventure Club came from parents who were seeking after-school activities for their children with special needs. In response to that need, Waverly ran Adventure Camp for four days during spring break during the last school year. The camp included a bowling day, a movie day, a recreational day at the JCC, and a day at Pump it Up in Norwalk. Over the summer, Waverly also ran a one-week Adventure Camp at Greenwich Country Day School, and a six-week Adventure Bowling league.

The program has been designed to run two days: one day will be a club day designed around themes, and the other day will be an inclusion day in which children will have an opportunity to sign up for a JCC class (Stamford Museum & Nature Center class at the JCC: Slimey, Scaly, Ooey, Gooey Science). They will be accompanied by a therapist who will facilitate their inclusion.
