GREENWICH, Conn. A new principal has been named for Riverside School in Greenwich. Effective July 1, Christopher D. Weiss, assistant principal at Wolfpit Elementary School in Norwalk, takes over the reins at Riverside.
"It is truly an honor to be chosen for this leadership position at Riverside School. I look forward to working closely with the school's staff, students, PTA, families and the community to continue to build on Riverside's strong tradition of excellence," Weiss said in a statement. The appointment of Weiss, who is also a part-time professor of education in Concordia Universitys Online Masters Program, was announced Tuesday.
At Wolfpit, Weiss led his team through a transition to the scientific research-based interventions framework and response to intervention. And, as a co-leader of the school's data team, he worked with his colleagues in developing Wolfpits instructional data teams. He also co-designed and implemented, with staff and parent input, a school growth plan that included goal-setting, data analysis, literacy assessment development and a schedule for implementation and data tracking.
His areas of focus throughout his career improving achievement for each student based on their individual needs, technology integration, character building, and service to the community, as well as his travel experience and knowledge of languages will serve the Riverside School community well, Greenwich Interim Superintendent Roger Lulow said in a statement. As evidenced by his track record, Christopher will maintain the high quality of instruction that already occurs at Riverside School and will lead the staff in challenging all students to reach even higher levels of achievement.
Weiss began his career in education in 1995 as fourth-grade teacher and technology specialist at Christian Heritage School in Trumbull. In 1999, he moved to Jane Ryan Elementary School in Trumbull as a fifth-grade teacher and technology specialist. He also held a part-time position at Sacred Heart University as an English as a second language professor from 2000 to 2003.
From 2003 to 2005, as a fifth-grade teacher and administrative intern at Frenchtown Elementary School, Weiss assisted in the opening and development of this new school in Trumbull. He also developed technology and language arts workshops for principals and teachers, fostered a community of published student authors, facilitated student-driven service projects and co-organized a schoolwide science fair. In 2005, he became assistant principal at Wolfpit.
Weiss received a bachelor's of science degree in computer science from Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., in 1991 and a master's in teaching from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield in 1995. He also received his sixth-year degree in educational administration from Sacred Heart in 2005. He was chosen to receive the Excellence in Educational Research Award from the university in 2006.
