GREENWICH, Conn. The Reading Champions program in Greenwich Public Schools is recruiting new volunteers in its fourth year of one-on-one student tutoring.
The program was initiated by United Way Youth Services Coordinator Jennuy Byxbee and retired Greenwich Public Schools teacher Joan Lowe, along with school reading specialists. Reading Champions has grown from one program in 2008 to include 12 sites.
Last year, volunteers worked with 367 elementary school children to improve reading and comprehension skills. For an application, visit the United Ways website and for further information, contact Joan Lowe, Jenny Byxbee, or call (203) 869-2221.
It is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greenwich, Womens Fellowship of the First Congregational Church and the Sokol Club, working in partnership with the Greenwich Public Schools and Greenwich United Way Youth Services Council.
