GREENWICH, Conn. Chemistry and science research teacher Andrew Bramante has been chosen as the Greenwich Public Schools representative for the 2013 Connecticut Teacher of the Year program, interim Superintendent of Schools Roger Lulow announced Tuesday.
Andy Bramante is energetic and enthusiastic in his work with students and as a result his students are motivated and inspired to learn, whether it is in chemistry or pursuing their own individual interests in science research. He challenges them to do their best and the evidence is the number of state, national and international recognitions that his students receive annually, Lulow said in a statement.
Bramante is one of six teachers selected by the Distinguished Teachers Awards Committee in April. The superintendent is charged with selecting one of the six to represent Greenwich in the state program.
Bramantes students have won at least one of the top four prizes at the Connecticut Science Fair in each of the five years he has taught a research class. Nine of his 20 students have competed at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. His students are also received prizes at the International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, the Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition, the Siemens Science Competition and the Intel Senior Talent Search.
Former student Eliza McNitt, Class of 2009, said: Once or twice in a lifetime, if you are lucky, you meet a teacher who changes your life. For me, that teacher was Andy Bramante. Mr. B treated me and my ideas with encouragement and respect. I proved you don't have to be a science genius to win the Intel International Science Fair. You must, however, be lucky enough to have the support of a teacher like Mr. B.
Greenwich High 2010 graduate David Finkelstein said: [Bramante] has taught me academic integrity through his strict citation standards, improved my presentation skills through countless run-throughs before science fairs, instilled in me a strong work ethic through his example of providing access to the lab during and after school hours, and taught me to explore new things by embracing my intrinsic interests.
Bramante will be honored by the Distinguished Teachers Awards Committee and by the Greenwich Kiwanis Club at the Board of Educations final meeting of the school year on June 21. The Kiwanis Club will present him with the Joseph Mitchell Kaye Award.
