Greenwich Math Team Wins State Competition

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich’s Eastern Middle School Math Team won first place this month in a state math competition, and one of its members will go on to represent the state in the national MathCounts competition in May.

Eighth-grader Michael Kural ranked number one in the state in the competition and will compete alongside three other Connecticut students May 11 at the nationals in Orlando, Fla. As the coaches of the first-place team, Eastern Middle School teachers Tara Hoffman and Kim Tecce will be coaching the Connecticut team.

The Connecticut MathCounts competition, a national middle school coaching and competitive math program, was hosted by the University of Hartford and conducted by the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers March 10.

Eastern’s math team included William Chen, Michael Kural, Steven Ma and William Yin.

The team qualified for the state event by winning first place at the Connecticut Southwest MathCounts Competition in February at Fairfield University. In addition to the four members of the team, Eastern students that participated in the regional competitions leading up to the state finals also included Dominic Calkosz, Jessica Cheng, Vijay Kadiyala, Christopher Popham, Matthew Wan and Madeleine Zhou.
