Students at North Mianus School in Greenwich were busy exchanging cards and eating Valentine's Day treats Friday afternoon. But in Laurie Robben's second-grade classroom, Cupid's holiday is more about celebrating friendships than love.
"I send home a letter to parents with a brief note to encourage them to let the kids write their own Valentines for the class," said Robben. "I take care of the issue that every child can be involved and parents know the expectation that they will be sharing Valentines. If you relate [Valentine's Day] to friendship, it's so wonderful because it's a dying holiday. It's just about friends sharing with friends."
Angela Schmidt, principal of North Mianus, said the school's policy is that every child in class must receive a Valentine. "Students in kindergarten to second grade have afternoon parties where they share their Valentines, poems and snacks." Schmidt also said the upper grades tie their Valentine's celebrations into their curriculum such as by playing math games.
In Robben's classroom, almost all of her students handmade cards for their peers and spent the afternoon crafting bags to bring their Valentine loot home.
