Greenwich High Civic Team Gathers Honors

Twenty-five Greenwich High School juniors and their coach, Aaron Hull, were honored at Thursday night’s Board of Education meeting for winning the state championships of We the People, a constitutional law competition for students.  

 

The competition is formatted similar to a congressional hearing. The team is run in conjunction with Hull’s AP government class. Students took an entrance test and worked outside of class to prepare for the competition. 

An entirely new team roster is selected each year, but Hull has led students for four years to nationals. “It’s all the kids’ effort. When they’re testifying, I’m on the sidelines, believe me,” said Hull. “They put a tremendous amount of effort, and they still manage to excel at a myriad of other activities. What they juggle boggles my mind.”

The team learns the We The People curriculum in June, then testifies in simulated congressional hearings in front of experts on political theory, the founding of the nation, the Civil War, the amendments, American governmental institutions, civil rights and civil liberties, and American citizenship.

This year’s members of the We the People team who will compete at nationals for four days starting on April 29, include: Carl Akerman, Noah Bardos, Warren Bein, Alina Carrel, Luke Cofer, William Hallisey, Connor Harris, Jennifer Hildibrand, Ellis Kim, Max Kim, James Knight, Hosung Kwon, Christina Lamoureux, Julia McDonald, Chloe McGovern, Cameron Molis, Thomas Newberry, Jonathan Palmer, Eduardo Pey, Gwendolyn Pfetsch, Andrew Reynolds, Paul Singer, Matthew Van Rhyn and Frederick Whelan.
