Greenwich High School will have a new administrative arrangement at the start of the 2011-12 school year. The reorganization will divide discipline and curriculum responsibilities between two positions, Superintendent Dr. Sidney Freund and GHS Headmaster Chris Winters announced Thursday.
"By separating student discipline from the role of the instructional leadership, we provide for more focused attention on the needs of students
as well as on improving instruction in the building," said Winters.
The new system will have an administrator in charge of each house -- Bella, Cantor, Clark, Folsom and Sheldon instead of a housemaster. And the house administrators will be responsible for curriculum and teacher assessment.
"The reorganization allows us to maximize administrative time devoted to instructional leadership, including classroom observation, teacher support and continuous review and refinement of curriculum," said Winters.
The house administrator will also replace three of the program administrator positions, Kim Eves, director of communications, said in a press release. Thus, the house administrator will be the head of an academic department -- such as math, English or social studies -- or the supervisor of the Teacher Evaluation and Professional Learning Plan.
The other new position is Dean of Students. This position will focus on constructing a safe and proactive learning environment. The Dean of Students will not only be in charge of student discipline but also serve as a liaison between such programs as business, art, music, media and ESL.
"The [current] five Assistant Deans and the Dean of Students will provide adequate support in working proactively to create a positive school climate and in addressing student digressions of our school rules," Winters said.
Freund said the House Administrator and Dean of Students positions would be filled internally. Winters said students will benefit by individualized support and assistance. "Students will continue to be part of a house --our preferred model for making a big school feel smaller."
