Greenwich Academy Marks 184th Commencement

Eighty Greenwich Academy girls dressed in white graduated at the school’s 184th Commencement ceremony Thursday.

Head of School Molly H. King expressed her pride in the graduates and said the scene represented the profound connectedness shared by the community.

Class speaker Yasmeen Audi addressed her classmates: saying, “Hi, girls! Is it seriously May 26, 2011? What first started out as knee-length jumpers has too soon become not-so-knee-length kilts. Our polos of pure white have so quickly transformed to those of awkward yellow, hunter green, matches-everyone’s-complexion navy, senior red and today, we-did-it white.”

Valedictorian Kirsten Schnackenberg introduced the commencement speaker, Jen Holleran, executive director of Startup: Education, a $100 million fund started by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to improve the public schools in Newark, N.J. Holleran talked about the need for reform in public schools all across America and about he own commitment to reform the Newark public schools. She commended the graduates on their achievements and told them to stay involved in serving others and to consider how they, too, may make a difference in education.

Richard Chilton Jr., chairman of the board of trustees, announced that the class senior fund had exceeded all expectations, citing the 100 percent participation of the senior parents. The Class of 2011 Endowed Fellowship Fund will ensure that each year a new teacher is designated a Class of 2011 Fellow.
