Greenwich Academy Graduate Discusses Her Career In Politics

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich Academy Class of 1999 graduate Hagar Hajjar Chemali recently returned to her alma mater to discuss her career in international relations in Washington, D.C., and offer advice to girls with an interest in political careers.

Since graduating from Greenwich Academy, Chemali earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Barnard College and a master's in international affairs from Columbia University.

She then served as the Middle East policy adviser for the Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes at the Treasury Department and later as director for Syria and Lebanon at the National Security Council at the White House.

Chemali started her new position as spokeswoman for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence for the U.S. Department of the Treasury on Jan. 1.

She offered advice to students to network as much as possible to create job opportunities and to have good writing skills. She also encouraged the girls to get into politics as more opportunities open up for women in Washington.
