GREENWICH, Conn. Artist Lauren Redniss, a Greenwich Academy graduate and Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer, will open an exhibition of her artwork and speak to students about her book chronicling the life of Marie Curie next month.
On Oct. 6, Greenwich Academys Luchsinger Gallery will present, Lauren Redniss: RADIOACTIVE, a show based on Redniss illustrated biography of Marie Curie, "Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie, A Tale of Love and Fallout."
Featured in the show will be cyanotypes and process-oriented pieces from the book, which details the life and work of Curie. Cyanotype is a chemical photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print.
Over the summer, students in the Upper School read the book, which combines art, science, history and literature to reveal the life of the physicist-chemist who pioneered research on radioactivity.
In the classroom, arts and science will come together as students explore the cyanotype process. Students will hear Redniss speak when she visits the campus Oct. 24 from 8 to 11 a.m. for the Duff Center symposium. As keynote speaker, Redniss will lead breakout sessions focusing on the themes and issues raised in "Radioactive." Students will attend sessions on topics ranging from the science behind the cyanotype print process to film representations of nuclear annihilation. In addition to book group-type discussion, these sessions will highlight the many dimensions of "Radioactive: from visual appeal, storytelling and examinations of scientific processes that work together to reveal Curies life.
Redniss is the creator of "Century Girl: 100 Years in the Life of Doris Eaton Travis, Last Living Star of the Ziegfeld Follies." Her writings and drawings have appeared in many publications, including the New York Times, which nominated her for the Pulitzer Prize. She was a fellow at the Cullman Center for Scholars & Writers at the New York Public Library in 2008-09 and became a New York Institute for the Humanities fellow in 2010. She teaches at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City.

The exhibitions opening reception will be Oct. 13 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Jacobs Lobby and Luchsinger Gallery at Greenwich Academy. The show will be open from Oct. 6 to Nov. 3. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
