Every teen is anxious to get behind the wheel and hit the road. Katherine Schultz, a Greenwich Academy senior, is taking an extra step by choosing to be environmentally conscious as well. Her efforts led to a change in the state's driving laws.
Two years ago, Schultz was taking a driving education class and her father, Bob, asked what she had learned. "I remember my response clearly," she said. "Don't worry, Dad. We are covering responsible driving. Like the hazards of driving under the influence." Her father then asked whether they were learning about environmentally responsible driving. This conversation sparked Schultz's imagination and prompted her to create a video about "green driving."
During her research, Schultz was surprised by the lack of information available on green driving, which made her focus on creating a video called "From Teen Driver to Green Driver." She and her father shot the video in Town Hall with the support and guidance of the state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Schultz four-minute video gives young drivers tips to lower their gas consumption and guidelines to keep an engine properly tuned.
Prospective drivers are now required to study Environmentally Responsible Driving before their driver's license exams. "This video is important for any driver to see, especially for teens, so that they learn early about the need for environmental awareness when driving," said Bill Seymour, DMV's director of corporate and public relations. "This informative, hands-on approach reflects Katherine's hard work and dedication to raising awareness among teens."
