Greenwich Academy's middle school students spent the past week feverishly working on their community service projects, including a recent endeavor to put together care packages for troops overseas.
Mary Lou Evans, director of communications at GA, said the holiday-decorated boxes were filled with granola bars, raisins and playing cards. The Middle School Community Service Club also organized a project to make cards for soldiers with the help of an American Red Cross representative.
Each year, GA hosts Community Service Day, when students go off campus and volunteer their time and effort to local organizations. This year, the girls worked feverishly to prepare for their visits. Students in Group V held a food drive to take donations to six local food banks. One site said the girls brought enough to feed 80 families. Group VI students picked out books and prepared art projects to show to students at neighboring schools. Girls in Group VII entertained nursing home resident and retirement center visitors with a choreographed dance and skit. Crayons and sketchpads were collected by students in Group VIII and donated to Head Start centers in Greenwich and Stamford.
Evans said the girls were surprised by how much their small acts meant to people. Part of the school's mission is to promote a sense of civic duty in students and making them aware of big-picture issues.
