Eight newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the University of Connecticut's main Storrs campus has forced dozens of students to enter a temporary quarantine after potentially being exposed to the virus.

According to UConn’s COVID-19 dashboard, three new cases have been confirmed in employees or affiliates, while three students living on-campus at Storrs and two off-campus students have all tested positive.

In response to the rash of positive cases, at least 35 students have been placed in quarantine, while nine students who tested positive have recovered. There are a total of 245 isolation beds at Storrs, with 212 still available.

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to COVID-19 has also been advised to temporarily isolate and monitor their health to see if any symptoms develop.

As of Wednesday, Jan. 27, the COVID-19 alert level at Storrs has hit red, which could potentially lead to mandatory quarantines, online classes, limited campus activities, and take out only at dining facilities, among other possible consequences.

Officials noted that “all commuter students taking in-person classes are required to be tested before returning to campus. Students who test positive cannot return to campus until they're medically cleared.”
