Cos Cob Kids Get Reading Help

Students at the Cos Cob School have been receiving one-on-one reading assistance with trained literacy volunteers thanks to the Greenwich United Way.

The United Way’s Reading Champions program is offered through its Youth Service Council to Greenwich elementary schools to narrow the achievement gap. According to Greenwich United Way spokeswoman Susan Ferris, Reading Champions tutors work individually with students every week to help them improve their reading and comprehension.

"Volunteers must go through a training course with school administrators in order to work in the program," said Ferris. "It is not a rigorous process, but everyone needs to be trained. Each volunteer works with students on their specific needs so they can read confidently."

Reading Champions began as a pilot program at North Mianus School in October 2008. It started with seven tutors and 24 students. This fall there were 88 tutors and   247 students. To find out more about the program or to volunteer, call (203) 869-2221.
