Greenwich teacher Anthony Mullen was a featured commentator on CNN on Tuesday after President Obama's televised address on education. Mullen, the 2009 National Teacher of the Year, told the news channel's audience he agreed with Obama's message on the importance of education.
"What I took from President Obama was very important," Mullen said. "He talked about the responsibility the government has, that teachers, schools and parents have, but most importantly, the responsibility that students have."
A former NYPD narcotics detective, Mullen began teaching in 2001 at the ARCH School, an alternative education unit of Greenwich High School. He now teaches ninth through 12th grade special education classes.
In his back to school address, given at Philadelphia's Julia R. Masterman School, Obama stressed the importance of education, now more than ever.
"Nobody gets to write your future but you. Your future is in your hands. Your life is what you make of it. And nothing -- absolutely nothing -- is beyond your reach," Obama said." "What you're doing is worth it. Nothing will have as great an impact in success in life than your education. ...The farther you go in school, the farther you go in life."
Obama acknowledged how teens have to take on more grown-up responsibilities as their families feel the strains of the economy. Despite these challenges students face, he called on them to think about their future and meet their responsibilities at school.
