Brunswick Students Donate Food and Clothing

GREENWICH, Conn. – Brunswick School kicked off community service projects in Greenwich and New York City with clothing donations for Midnight Run and food donations for Neighbor-to-Neighbor.

“After four hours of deliveries, I stood in the rain and watched the boys take the jackets off their own backs to give to those in need,” said Johnny Montanez, athletics faculty member for the upper school and director of community service. “I’m so proud to be associated with these boys. They have hearts of gold and a sincere passion to help others.”

The volunteer organization Midnight Run is dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless and has been part of Brunswick’s community service mission for the past eight years.

On Oct. 4, Montanez, upper school science teacher and department co-chair Steve Webber and a group of students delivered clothing and food packages for Midnight Run to more than 70 homeless men and women in New York City. The students were juniors Larry Aspilaire, Christopher Brown, Ali Coopersmith, Holden Fett, Chris Hart, Corey Juan and James Skinner and sophomores Ryan Amill, Cole Cunningham, Rohan Das, Drew Peisch and Tyler Spaulding.

Brunswick students also initiated a new community service project with Neighbor to Neighbor, a local food pantry operated through Christ Church Greenwich. In one month, the school donated four large crates of canned food, pasta and dry mixes, which will help serve between 1,000 to 1,500 neighbors in Greenwich. Students will continue to collect and drop off donations the last Friday of every month, according to Courtney Kennedy, communications assistant for the school.

Community service is an integral part of the Brunswick experience, according to Kennedy. The school believes a complete education must include lessons that take place outside the classroom, Kennedy said. It tries to develop empathetic and responsible citizens who appreciate the importance of giving for the benefit of others, she said.
