School Principal Cindy Rigling sent a note to parents and staff Monday that said, “Due to personal reasons, Ms. Vargas-Guevara had to resign her position with the District. We wish her well in her future endeavors."

No other reason was given for the resignation by Carmen Vargas-Guevara.

Trudi Durrell has been appointed as the interim assistant principal. Durrell is currently the coordinator of ESL/bilingual education for the Greenwich Public Schools.

"She is familiar with both the district and the specific needs of the Hamilton Avenue community," Rigling said. "Ms. Durrell will begin to transition from her current role into this position over the next few weeks. She will be a great resource and asset to the Hamilton Avenue School and community as we begin a search for a new assistant principal for the 2016-17 school year.

"We are working on setting a date for parents to meet Ms. Durrell in the near future and will share that information as soon as possible.”

District administration will develop a short-term plan to cover Durrell’s ESL program responsibilities.

Durrell has been with the Greenwich Public Schools since 2001, initially as an ESOL teacher and since 2010 as the ESL program coordinator for the district. Before coming to Greenwich, Durrell spent five years (1996-2001) as an ESL Instructor at Bunnell High School in Stratford and one year (1995-96) at PS 84Q in Long Island City, N.Y.

Durrell received her bachelor's degree in international diplomacy and Soviet studies from the University of Connecticut in 1990. She received a master's in TESOL from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, New York, in 1995; and her sixth-year certificate in reading and remedial language arts from Southern Connecticut State University in 2000.

Vargas-Guevara began working in the Greenwich Public Schools as assistant principal of Hamilton Avenue School in August 2013. Before that, she served as a teacher and an administrator in Connecticut and Massachusetts public schools.

Guevara received her bachelor's degree from Salem State University in Massachusetts; a master’s degree in educational leadership from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Mass.; and additional graduate study at both Salem State University and the University of Connecticut.
