5th-Grader Wins Geography Bee

Fifth-grader Ellie Urdang’s knowledge of names and places around the world has given her a shot at a $25,000 college scholarship. The Greenwich Academy student won a school-wide National Geographic Bee on Dec. 1.

Urdang and 17 other GA students were required to answer oral questions on geography. The National Geographic Society is holding its 23rd competition for fourth- through eighth-grade students across the country, plus students in five U.S territories as well as those from Department of Defense Dependents' Overseas School.

The next step for Urdang will be to complete a written test on geography. The top-scorers will compete in a statewide bee on April 1. The Google-sponsored event will take the state champions on all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national championship hosted by Alex Trebek on May 24 and 25. The winner will also win a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
