GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwich voters mirrored the rest of Connecticut in Tuesdays primary election, choosing endorsed candidates Chris Murphy (D) and Linda McMahon (R) to be on Novembers ballot for the U.S. Senate.
Murphy received 1,180 votes in Greenwich, defeating Susan Bysiewicz, who received 219 votes in the town. McMahon received 466 votes more than Chris Shays in Greenwich, with a total of 1,939 votes.
Murphy currently represents the states 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has served since 2006. He is a Cheshire resident with his wife, Catherine; and sons, Owen and Rider.
McMahon, the former chief executive officer of World Wrestling Entertainment, does not have any political experience, other than an unsuccessful U.S. Senate run two years ago, when she was defeated by Richard Blumenthal (D). She lives in Greenwich with her husband, Vince. They have two adult children, Shane and Stephanie.
The two candidates chosen Tuesday will vie for the seat that will be left vacant by U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I), who will retire at the end of his term. Blumenthal is the other senator representing Connecticut.
Greenwich voters came out to do their civic duty Tuesday without one particular issue in mind, but rather to support a particular candidate or set an example for others.
One Republican named Carol, who declined to give a last name, came out to support McMahon against Shays. Hes been overspending, and I just want him out, she said, leaving Old Greenwich School after voting.
Heidi Matonis said she always votes, but made an extra effort to come out Tuesday because she has a foreign exchange student from China living with her family, and wanted to help teach her about democracy. She also brought a bunch of I Voted Today stickers to show the student.
