HARTFORD, Conn. -- State Rep. Fred Camillo (R-151) has proposed a bill that would require all school buses built in 2021 and after to have lap and shoulder belts at every seat.

Camillo, who would also like to see older buses retrofitted with seat belts, presented testimony for the bill before the Transportation Committee on Wednesday, March 2.

The proposal comes after a string of bus accidents over the past ten years.

Last spring, a group of Greenwich fourth graders were involved in a bus accident on their way back from a tour of the State Capitol.

Six years ago, a crash on I-84 in Hartford killed a Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science student from Rocky Hill and injured seven others.

“While we can’t legislate a 100 percent foolproof safety mechanism, we do have it within our powers to do all we can to decrease the chances of tragedies,” Camillo said.
