Blumenthal, who faced no Democratic challengers, got the nod at the Connecticut Democratic State Convention held at the Connecticut Convention Center, the Mirror said.
In his speech, he praised his Senate colleague Bernie Sanders for his energetic presidential campaign, the CT Mirror said.
But Blumenthal, who is a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, said he is committed to his Yale law classmate, Hillary Clinton, CT Mirror said.
In 2010, Blumenthal was elected to his first term in the U.S. Senate by defeating WWE founder Linda McMahon. He had previously served as state attorney general and in the state House and Senate.
Blumenthal's Republican challenger will be chosen Monday at the GOP state convention in Hartford.
Three candidates are seeking the Republican nomination, all from Fairfield County:
- August Wolf, a Stamford businessman and former Olympian in the shot put;
- Rep. Dan Carter of Bethel, a three-term state legislator; and
- Jack Orchulli of Darien, a co-founder and former chief executive of the Michael Kors fashion company. He ran and lost in the 2004 U.S. Senate race and in the 2010 race for state comptroller.
Any candidate who wins at least 15 percent of the delegate vote at the state party convention is automatically qualified for a primary in August.
