At 4:30 a.m., an RC taxi driver was dispatched to Morgan Avenue in Greenwich for a pickup, police said. The driver was flagged down near the pickup location by a lone man who said he was the taxi driver's intended fare, police said.
The man got in the back seat and requested a destination in Port Chester, N.Y., police said. Once the cab was in motion, the passenger suddenly grabbed the driver and started punching him and demanded the cab driver's cash, police said.
As the driver struggled with his attacker, he lost control of the cab, police said. The cab continued to roll slowly before it slammed into a tree and came to a stop, police said.
The cab driver was able to flee the taxi while the suspect remained locked in the back seat, police said. The cab driver ran to a nearby house seeking help, and the resident called 911, police said.
The suspect jumped over the front seat backrest, got out of the cab through the front seat and fled on foot, police said. The victim suffered minor cuts, abrasions, and bruising to his head in the attack and crash, police said.
The suspect was described as a man with a complexion in his 20s who spoke English with no discernible accent, police said. He has a scruffy beard and is about 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7, police said. He was wearing a dark-colored hoodie and possibly a baseball hat, police said.
