The Greenwich Fire Department reported that an accident occurred in the area of the exit for King Street just before 3 p.m. Pictures showed a car was smashed by a large tree, which scattered debris across all lanes of traffic.
No one was injured in the accident, but traffic delays were reported in both directions on the Merritt in the area at the time.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation said the closure was between Exits 28 and 27 on the southbound Merritt.
Strong and gusty winds are wrecking havoc across Fairfield County, with a high wind warning in effect until 6 p.m. and reports of winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Eversource was also reporting over 800 power outages in Greenwich on Monday afternoon at the time of the crash. That number was down to about 600 customers without power by 6 p.m. Monday.
