Greenwich Women Offered Free Self-Defense Course

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich women can get lessons in self-defense through a free five-week course offered by the Greenwich Police Department Special Victim’s Section.

The target demographic is recent high school graduates or college-age women. The course is designed to prepare women to thwart assailants.

The class will be taught by Greenwich Police Officers using core principles of modern female self-defense programs. It will emphasize situational awareness, handling confrontations, and protecting yourself from a larger, stronger attacker.

Participants will learn maneuvers and techniques from officers trained in Brazilian jujitsu who have been certified as instructors by the Gracie Combative Military and Law Enforcement Academy.

Enrollment is limited to 30 participants who will be divided into two 15-person training groups. The program runs each Tuesday and Thursday for 90-minutes from July 24 through Aug. 21. Group One meets at 6 p.m. and Group Two at 7:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Complex, 1 Bruce Place.

Those interested should contact Sgt. Mark Zuccerella at 203-618-8347 or by email no later than July 16.
