He graduated from the 225th Class of the Connecticut Municipal Police Training Council’s Basic Police Academy.
Carriero’s assignments included the Patrol Division, the Traffic Section and the Dispatch Center.
Prior to becoming a sworn officer, Carriero served the Town of Greenwich as a Public Safety Dispatcher for three years.
As an Accident Car Investigator, he was called upon to investigate some of the town's most serious motor vehicle accidents.
As a Field Training Officer, he oversaw the initial field training of police academy graduates.
Carriero was promoted to Master Police Officer in 2009. He received numerous commendations for excellent police work in the apprehension of wanted criminals. These actions were exhibited in many diverse incidents over the years ranging from mundane cases such as shoplifting to perilous ones such as armed robberies.
Carriero has been recognized by the Chief of Police as the Officer of the Month on two occasions. In January of 2009, he was recognized for his efforts in a CPR resuscitation which involved a difficult extrication of the patient and again in March of 2014 for yet another CPR resuscitation.
In addition, throughout his career, Carriero has strongly enforced motor vehicle laws, especially in the specialized area of commercial trucking.
“Phil’s is a highly prolific and accomplished patrol officer, and he earned the rank of Master Police Officer. Phil dedicated himself so thoroughly to traffic regulations that his mastery of the complexities of truck law made him a GPD in-house truck expert," said Police Chief James Heavey.
"If Phil didn’t have the answer in his head, he was able to research it quickly and thoroughly. We are fortunate that Phil will continue to serve the town as a Special Police Officer. I wish him all the best and may the road rise up to meet you."
