"The working theory was that this house was targeted," police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said about the 10 p.m. Monday home invasion at a Ridge Street home.
The middle-age couple had just gone to sleep in their second-floor bedroom when the woman heard a noise, Gray said. The man opened the bedroom door and was shocked to find three men holding crow bars, Gray said.
The robbers immediately ordered the man to lead them to the safe, where they were able to grab thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry, Gray said.
The robbers tied up the couple and told them not to move during the home invasion.
"They fully complied with all instructions given to them," Gray said. "They were not hurt, they were tied up loosely and left. A little bit later they were able to free themselves and contact us."
The residents were not hurt, he said.
The suspects are described as black men in their 20s to 30s. They wore dark clothing and partial masks during the robbery.
Solving the crime will be a top priority for the department, said police Capt. Mark Kordick, who heads the detective division.
"A home invasion of this type is fortunately very rare in Greenwich," he said. "The violation of the sanctity of someone's home is a significant crime and one which our department takes extremely seriously. This will be a priority investigation for the division."
