Greenwich Man Charged For Endangering Fire Police

GREENWICH, Conn.--A Greenwich man was arrested Saturday outside Christ Church after dragging a fire police officer with his car and fleeing the area that had been closed off due to downed power lines.

A large tree outside the church had snapped in a violent and heavy rain storm leaving electrical power lines exposed and starting intermitted fires. Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Police were waiting for Connecticut Light & Power to turn off the electrical circuit when a meeting let out at the church. One group member circumvented the safety zone fire police had set up around the downed lines. He suddenly turned right and walked through the zone directly under an electrical power line.

Fire police attempted to stop him, but the group member continued to walk to his car. While he was in his car, the man was confronted by a fire police officer. He tried to pass the officer, when the driver’s side mirror of the car caught the inside of the officer’s coat and dragged the officer 15 to 20 feet before he was able to free himself. The man drove away from the scene.

Investigations led to Charles Mansfield, 39, of 322 Delavan Avenue, who contacted police to initiate a complaint against the fire police officer, but his account of the incident did not support the evidence on the vehicle. Mansfield was issued a summons for reckless endangerment, interfering with a peace officer, and evading responsibility. He posted a $250 bond and is due in court Aug. 12.

The fire police officer was treated for scrapes and bruises to the palms of both hands and his left knee.

He was seen head butting the victim on the video. He was released on a $1,000 bond and was due in court Monday.
