Elizabeth Lewis, 17, of Riverside, was issued tickets for violating rules preventing a collision and having insufficient personal floatation devices while waterskiing in connection with the death of Emily Fedorko, 16, of Greenwich, on Aug. 6, 2014. She faces a total fine of $150. Lewis was driving the boat when the fatal accident occurred, police said.
John Capozzi from the State's Attorney's Office for Juvenile Matters concluded that only Lewis would be prosecuted in connection with the boating death of Fedorko, Greenwich police said in a statement issued Friday.
Fedorko died after she fell off her water tube into the water and was run over by a boat while water-tubing off the coast of Greenwich Point. A second teenager also suffered serious injuries in the accident, police said at the time.
Lewis made a quick turn to pick up the water tubers and collided with the two girls while they were still in the water, police said. The girls became entangled in the propeller, police said.
Lewis and a passenger immediately lifted the two injured girls into the boat and transported them to the Old Greenwich Yacht Club dock located at Greenwich Point Park.
At the time of the accident, police said the 16-year-old who was driving the boat was properly licensed to operate it. The boat was a 21-foot Wahoo center console recreational powerboat with a 200 horsepower outboard engine.
There were no adults on the boat, Heavey said. The four girls on the boat were all 15 and 16 years old at the time. In the state of Connecticut, the minimum age to operate a boat is 16, as long as the boater has passed a safe boating course.
The second girl in the water suffered serious cuts to her leg and was treated at Stamford Hospital, where she received a large number of stitches.
Emily, a resident of Old Greenwich, would have been a junior this past year at Greenwich High School. She sustained a fatal injury to her torso and died at the scene, police said.
Detectives from Greenwich Police, the department's Marine Division and marine accident experts from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spent considerable time on the investigation into the boating accident, police said.
