Thomas DeGrippo Sr., 82, Greenwich Carpenter

GREENWICH, Conn. – Thomas G. DeGrippo Sr. of Greenwich died June 27 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 82. 

Born Dec. 20, 1929, in the Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Clarence and Margaret McHale DeGrippo. He grew up in Port Jervis, N.Y., before moving to Greenwich and graduating from J.M. Wright Technical Trade School in Stamford. 

DeGrippo worked as a union carpenter for Local 210 for 38 years. He also worked for W.W. Construction and Grasso Construction in Greenwich. DeGrippo served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, from 1951-53. He continued in the U.S. Army Reserves for an additional two years.

He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus Council 39 in Greenwich. DeGrippo married his wife, the former Mary Carretto, in 1954. He enjoyed going to Foxwoods Resort Casino with his wife and was an avid New York Yankees, New York Giants and wrestling fan. 

DeGrippo was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in December of 2009. He is survived by a son, Thomas G. (Jean) DeGrippo Jr., of Kennesaw, Ga.; two daughters, Barbara J. (Lee) Leonard, of Greenwich, and Nancy (Thomas) Troy, of Norwalk; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. DeGrippo also was predeceased by three siblings, John DeGrippo, Ann Howey and Clarence "Butch" DeGrippo. 

Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in Byram. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
