Hirshhorn, a a graduate of Greenwich High School, started buying modern art when she was married to Joseph H. Hirshhorn, founder of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, part of the Smithsonian Institution, and later became a serious collector in her own right, according to The New York Times.
The couple met in the 1960s in Greenwich where Hirshhorn was running a small employment agency and he needed to hire help for a house he had purchased nearby, The New York Times said.
Among many famous artists, Hirshhorn through her husband met Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Calder, according to the article.
