GREENWICH, Conn. – John Wynne Sr., a 46-year Greenwich resident, died Nov. 15 at his home, with family at his side. He was 82.
Born June 19, 1930, in Stamford, he was a son of Edward Victor and Helen Collins Wynne. He graduated from St. John's Parochial School in 1945 and Stamford High School in 1948. He received a bachelor's degree from Trinity College in 1952.
Wynne served in the Air Force as a second lieutenant in Japan and Korea. He received a law degree from New York University School of Law in 1957.
Wynne joined Chemical Bank in 1963 as an assistant legal officer. He was named resident counsel in 1967, vice president and counsel in 1969, secretary and general counsel in 1972 and senior vice president in 1977.
He was a member of the New York State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the American, Connecticut, New York City and New York State Bar associations.
Wynne served as general counsel and corporate secretary for Chemical Bank through the merger with Manufacturers Hanover Corporation. In 1996, Chemical Banking Corporation merged with Chase Manhattan Corporation, where he remained corporate secretary until his retirement later that year.
He served as president of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America for three years. He then served as national chairman of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for six years.
He was honored twice at the White House for his philanthropic efforts with the organizations. He was also active locally in organizing the Greenwich Elementary Catholic School System and busing for all non-public school children.
He loved his family, his bloodhound, Chase, his classical music collection, season tickets to the Metropolitan Opera House and Carnegie Hall, and the New York Yankees.
Wynne is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sally; five children, John B. (Anemone) Wynne Jr., of Greenwich, Stephen Damien Wynne, of Greenwich, Lila Wynne, of Mount Laurel, N.J., Jean Wynne Fulton, of Old Greenwich, and Tony (Kim) Wynne, of Riverside; two sisters, Helen T. Wynne, of Riverside, and Julie Wynne Breunich, of Stamford; and 13 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Wynne Hanrahan; and two brothers, Edward Wynne and Thomas Wynne.
A memorial service will be held at noon Dec. 15 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rye Brook, N.Y. A reception will follow at the Doral Arrowwood at 975 Anderson Hill Road in Rye Brook. Condolences may be sent to tonywynne@msn.com.
