Dr. Edith Beck, 91, Retired Greenwich Internist

GREENWICH, Conn. – Dr. Edith M. Beck, a longtime Greenwich resident, died Friday, Aug. 17, at Greenwich Hospital with friends and her minister at her side. She was 91.

She was born Jan. 16, 1921 in New York City to Berton E. and Anna Weising Beck. Raised in Woodland Heights, Bronx, N.Y., Beck attended Evander Childs High School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939.

In 1943, she matriculated from Mount Holyoke College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a minor in physics. After a short stint as a research chemist, Beck attended Yale University College of Medicine and received her medical degree in 1948.

For the next four years, she served as a house officer at the New York University division of Bellevue Hospital. In 1953, she moved to Greenwich to begin her practice as an internist.

Throughout her career as a physician, Beck was on staff at Greenwich Hospital, chairing the general medical section for many years. She also served as president of the Greenwich Medical Society and as a member of the American Medical Society. She retired from her physician practice in 1991.

Beck was on the editorial board of Connecticut Medicine, the state medical journal and was a clinical instructor at Yale University School of Medicine. In 1980, she became a member and chairperson for the town of Greenwich's Board of Health, from which she retired in 1997.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich for more than 50 years, serving as an ordained deacon and elder, a Sunday school teacher and a chair on many church committees.

Beck was also very active in mission minister. In addition to serving the Presbyterian Church in Greenwich, she was also active in the Presbytery of Southern New England. She also volunteered with the Call-A-Ride organization and American Red Cross and served as a trustee for the town of Greenwich.

She was also a regular patron of the Greenwich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chamber Players of the Greenwich Symphony. Retirement offered her the opportunity to indulge her love of music, poetry, gardening, reading books and travel.

Her parents and sister, Benita Beck Blumenthal, predeceased her. She is survived by relatives in the U.S. and England.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at First Presbyterian Church.
