GREENWICH, Conn. Carsten Bruun Luckman, a longtime Greenwich resident, died Oct. 7 at Greenwich Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was 81.
Born March 3, 1931, in Jakarta, Indonesia, he was the son of Clemens Anton Luckman of Holland and Ingeborg Christiansen of Norway. Luckman spent his early childhood living in Indonesia and Holland, moving permanently to Norway in 1938.
After graduating from the Maritime College in Oslo, he studied for a year in London at the London School of Foreign Trade and graduated in 1954. He then returned to Oslo to begin his career in shipping as a trainee for RS Platou Shipbrokers.
In 1959, Luckman moved to New York and joined A.L. Burbank as a shipbroker. In 1984, he took a position in Greenwich with Stolt-Nielsen, where he remained until his retirement in December 1997.
Luckman moved with his family from Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., to Riverside in 1976. He continued in Riverside until his death. One of his favorite activities was visiting Tod's Point, where he enjoyed taking long walks along the beach or just reading and relaxing.
In his later years, Luckman enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was also a member of the Connecticut Maritime Association.
He is survived by a son, Morten C. Luckman, of Norwalk; a daughter, Carina (Fabio) Calia, of New Canaan; two brothers, Jan Luckman and Hans Bang, of Oslo, Norway; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church of Greenwich in Old Greenwich. A reception will immediately follow. Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich is handling arrangements.
