Anker was born in Nesna, Norway, and graduated from Styrmann Eksamen, Norway's Navigational College in Oslo. He received a license in radar and gyro from Kristiansand Institute, Norway; a diving and diving theory degree from Oslo University, and an administrative business degree from the University of Southampton, England. He began his maritime career at Norway's three-masted training ship, "Sorlandet," and with Nils Ebbsen Shipping Co., Oslo, Norway; National Bulk Carriers, N.Y., New York; La Dano Linjen A/S, Norway; and Thoresen Car Ferries, LTD, Southampton, England.
After 25 years and 10 months of actual sea time, he became port captain for Hess Oil Virgin Island Corporation in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. While there he was appointed Royal Norwegian Consul to St. Croix by King Olav VI of Norway. He was next asked by Cruise East/The Thoresen Group in the Republic of Singapore to accept the position of maritime superintendent. He ended his career in the shipping industry as vice president and Fleet A manager, with Stolt-Nielsen, Inc., U.S.A., retiring in 1995 to Vermont, where in 1997 he became a United States citizen.
Anker is survived by his wife, Andrea (Hobbs) Anker; son, Bjorn Kristian Anker (Catherine); two grandchildren; sisters, Kirsten Pedersen and Unn Anker; brother, Torgeir Anker; and nieces and nephews.
There will be no public memorial service. His ashes will be divided and dispersed to the Norwegian Sea and a mountain peak in Norway, the Gulf of Mexico off the U.S. coast and a mountain peak in Vermont, as well as West Dover Cemetery.
