GREENWICH, Conn. Betty Foote Lovejoy, a former Greenwich resident, died July 5 at the Stone Institute of Newton, Mass. She was 87.
She was born in Pemberton, Lancashire, England to Eva Johnson and John Henry Foote. A "war bride", she married Allen F. Lovejoy Esq., an American Army captain, and immigrated to the U.S. soon after. Lovejoy moved to Greenwich, where she was a resident for nearly 60 years.
Lovejoy graduated with honors from Wigan Girls High School and won a scholarship to further her studies in college. She initially started work in banking, where she met her husband.
A gourmet cook, gardener and naturalist, she earned a botany certificate from the New York Botanical Garden. Lovejoy and her husband were active members of St. Paul's Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a needlepoint artist, an avid golfer and tennis player.
Lovejoy won several awards and championships at the Riverside Yacht Club and Stanwich Club. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the British Empire for many years, serving as chapter regent.
She was a longtime volunteer with the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary, serving more than 4,000 hours in the coffee shop and gift shop.
Lovejoy is survived by three children, Jennifer L. (Edward) Craddock, of Massachusetts, Charles F. Lovejoy of Massachusetts and Allen P. (Lorain) Lovejoy, of Connecticut; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at St. Paul's Church in Riverside.
