Drivers, as of Aug. 1, start shedding your registration stickers.
With advances in technology, the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles will allow vehicles to be driven legally without windshield registration stickers. This includes trailers and motorcycles.
Police can now check a vehicle's registration via a computer system that captures the image of a license plate with a camera on a patrol car. Drivers will still be required to keep their paper registration in their vehicle at all times.
According to DMV Commissioner Robert M. Ward, eliminating the stickers will save about $400,000 a year. The DMV is planning a second registration improvement that is also expected to save $400,000, bringing the annual savings to $800,000.
Starting in September, the mailing of renewed registration certificates will be eliminated. Drivers will now have a tear-off certificate as part of the registration application.
