GREENWICH, Conn. Five percent of Wednesday's sales at the Whole Foods Market of Greenwich will go to the Armstrong Court Community Organic Garden, garden coordinator Patti Sechi announced Tuesday.
This is a great way to help your local community garden while you shop, Sechi said in a release.
The 15,000-square-foot garden was started four years ago to create a space for residents of the public housing complex and community members who didnt have their own areas for planting.
Last year, the garden became a nonprofit organization. According to Sechi, the organization started a butterfly garden for the children who attend Head Start and for those who live at Armstrong Court. Extensive native plantings were also done with support from Audubon At-Home and McArdle's Florist. And Whole Foods Market provides organic soil, while the Garden Education Center of Greenwich donates packets of seeds and plants. In turn, the garden has been able to provide hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to the Neighbor to Neighbor food pantry.
This year, the garden will focus on building as many as 75 raised beds and on terracing the higher end of each garden plot, with the goal of creating raised beds and terraces throughout the entire garden by spring 2013. Garden beds will be installed in April. To volunteer installing garden beds on April 7 or April 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., contact Sechi at psechi@gmail.com.
Whole Foods is located at 90 East Putnam Ave. in Greenwich.
